Environment prioritized expressway construction becoming one with nature
Meeting locations are getting closer every day thanks to road builders, people who are giving their all even at this moment on construction sites nationwide. When nature and the roads become one, meetings become more meaningful
Expressway construction
The current 24 expressway routes which cover 2,874km (or 25 routes which cover 3,103 routes if the privately financed route is included) will be expanded to cover 4,000km by 2010. This will enable access to an expressway within 30 minutes from anywhere in the country and the plan is to integrate the country more fully, making any region accessible with half a day. Furthermore, 9 axis of west-east and 7 axis of south-north expressways will be carried out creating a lattice expressway network with a total length of 6,160km by 2020. Together with the Asian highway network and the south-north Korea reunification era we are in, this will mark a new chapter in our expressways.

Measures for Environment-Friendly Expressways
- Building expressways that are in harmony with their surroundings
- Bypassing or minimizing damage to protected areas
(ecological scenes, preserved wet lands, natural parks and cultural properties)
- Building bridges and tunnels with sound proofed walls
- Building shelter facilities for wild animals
- Promoting construction of environment-friendly service areas: eco-parks, solar power facilities, non-discharge wastewater management and free-draining floors in parking lots
- Jeonju Arboretum: Collects and manages various plant species, supports construction of environment-friendly expressways and develops technologies

Management Description |
Planning & Design |
- Environment experts participate in the design and planning of expressways
- Run an NGO-driven advisory committee and PI
- Analyze impact through strategic environment and environment impact evaluation and establish reducing measures
- The Central Environment Preservation Advisory Committee reviews impact on natural scenes
- Bypass or build a bridge or tunnel in areas worth preserving in order to minimize environmental damage
|
| Construction |
- Conduct environment impact surveys during the construction work, and implement what was agreed on environment impact evaluation
- Activities to reduce environmental damage: sound proof plates, dust proof nets, wheel/car washing facilities, filth-preventing film, wastewater treatment facilities, ground vibration-reducing blasting
- Active recycling of waste articles and recyclable materials
- Active recycling of waste articles and recyclable materials
- Tree-planting on slopes for restoration of natural environment, create gardening block in the river
- Build eco-passages, guided fences, and shelters for wild animals
- Reward companies showing good environment management and grant environmental excellence awards
|
| Maintenance |
- Post-environment impact survey (air quality, noise, and water quality)
- Monitoring to prevent road kills, find eco-passages, build fences to prevent intrusions
- Plant flowers and trees for Green Freeway Campaign
- Develop environment-friendly construction methods and materials
|
Expansion plans of existing expressways
- Major business to increase road safety and efficiency
- Priory execution on sections of continued traffic congestion
- Wide relief of roads with harsh curves and inclinations, expansion of underground roads
- The current total KEC expressway extension is 1,332km
(double the length of expressway management extension in the early 70s)
